This past weekend, MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) held a special screening of offbeat (as in non-mainstream) hindi films…The idea was to show how the gap between “commercial/masala” and “parallel” movies is reducing in Indian cinema. We caught two of these movies – Dor by Nagesh Kukunoor and “Shoonya” by Arindam Mitra. Dor was extremely well executed in story, narrative, direction and conveying the message. It’s a heartwarming story of two women who find friendship in each other under very unusual circumstances, and ultimately carve their own destiny despite inherent obstacles….
Shoonya, on the other hand, was quite a disappointment – it was slow, repetitive and a laborious narrative of a cricketer who’s accused of match fixing (quite similar to Mohd. Azzharuddin’s story…hmmm…). Although we din’t get a chance to catch a lot of the movies being exhibited, I applaud any effort to build awareness around the tremendous progression Indian cinema has made in the last five years. Whether its Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta hai (as a masala film) or Nagesh’s Dor, we seem to be moving in the right direction.

you missed "Khosla ka Ghosla"? that has to be one of the best films made last year... in fact one of the best I've seen...
Unfortunately, I fell ill Saturday night, and we decided to skip Khosla Ka Ghosla.
