I am very passionate about a few causes and I feel the need to blog about them. Sometimes (or maybe mostly) blogging can be a single powerful medium to reach out to a lot of poeple. I strongly believe that a little help can go a long way....but the focus of this post is one particular cause I am wildly passionate about...
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF):
This is probably the cause I am most dedicated to - research that finds a cure for diabetes especially for juvenile diabetics, often children as small as infant babies..a proof of "a little help going a long way" is when I did the Walk last year - I raised over $4,000 just by sending the message out to friends and family...I intend to do the same this year. In addition, this has been a pet project of mine - I help out with legislative advocacy on stem cell research for diabetes, and volunteer at area events.
This post is not a testament to charity work, but to how passionately I feel about causes such as these. Its so easy to wallow in self-pity and feel like the world has wronged you for every little mishap in our lives. But when you see a lot of these kids with needles and stringent diets (at most time deprived of ice-cream and candy - kids favorite diet), you begin to realize how much luckier you are...their spirit and strength makes you an eternal optimist.
Its really heartening to see the impact it has had on my own life and approach to life.
At the end of the day, it stops becoming about me, and starts becoming about them.
